Advent: Meaning, Symbols, and How to Prepare
Advent is a season of hope — preparing the heart for the coming of Jesus Christ.
Advent is the first season of the liturgical year. It is a sacred time of waiting, preparation, and spiritual renewal. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin adventus, meaning coming.
During Advent, the Church prepares for two realities: the celebration of Christ’s birth at Christmas, and the hope of His second coming.
What Advent Means for Catholics
- Hope: God is coming — He has not forgotten His people.
- Preparation: not only gifts, but the heart.
- Repentance: clearing the soul for Christ.
- Faith: trusting God in silence and waiting.

Advent Prayer for Hope
Lord Jesus Christ,
as I wait for Your coming, fill my heart with hope.
Teach me to prepare my soul, not only my home.
Remove fear and anxiety from my heart.
Give me patience, peace, and trust in Your timing.
Come, Lord Jesus — and renew me.
Amen.
